Taking its cue from the exhibition\u00a0Russia and the Arts: the Age of Tolstoy and Tchaikovsky<\/em>, this international conference explores music, literature and the visual and performing arts in Imperial Russia in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Presenting new or little-known discoveries as well as works of world renown, speakers will consider the extraordinary creativity of artists, writers and composers such as Repin, Chekhov and Rimsky-Korsakov, and the intriguing dialogues and relationships that developed between them. While some of these figures favoured Russian themes and motifs, others drew their inspiration from western culture. The conference aims to explore the rich and complex ideas that resulted, as Russia\u2019s creative talents nurtured visual, theatrical, musical and literary traditions of their own. The conference will conclude with a musical performance by Anton Lyakovsky of Mussorsky\u2019s\u00a0Pictures at an Exhibition<\/em>.<\/p>\n
